A question that is often asked
When you first launch iWeb and create a site, then quit iWeb some files and folders are created. The ones that you will most commonly hear about are the domain file and the iWeb Preference File.
The domain file is everything to you as this contains your whole iWeb site, if you want to create a backup (As is good practice with all data files) then this is the one you want.
The preference file contains information about your iWeb install, and is easy recreated.
Where does my domain file live?
Here of course, well this is where iWeb puts it, but you may have moved it to another location! YourUser/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites (depending on your preferences your may or may not see the .sites appended to the domain file).
Note: The iWeb folder is only created once you have launched iWeb for the first time, if you are moving to a new computer it wont be there. To create this folder just launch and quit iWeb.
What about my Preference file?
Your iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, lives in your preference folder with all of your other preference files. This is located here: User/Library/Preferences/.
You may see people suggesting that you “trash your prefs file”, what this means is that you quit iWeb and then move com.apple.iWeb.plist to your Trash. When you relaunch iWeb a new preference file will be created.
Isn’t my site on my iDisk?
Well yes, your site is there but your domain file isn’t!
When you publish to .Mac, you are asking iWeb to generate the files required for a website, which it does at the touch of a button. What it doesn’t do is move your domain file to your iDisk, therefore if you delete or “lose” your domain file you no longer have the ability to open your website in iWeb. Make a regular copy of your domain file and keep it somewhere safe!
Backup your domain file!
