The first thing to say about MassReplaceIt (MRI) is, wow, how cool is this! MRI is a great find and replace application that is free/donation ware, therefore if you find that you use it, please donate to the author. After all, your iWeb life is now easier!
Find the MassReplaceIt website here: http://hexmonkeysoftware.com also available form the Apple website.
What does it do?
The best place to find out all about MRI is to visit the website above, but simply put it allows you to search a folder or list of files for specific text and then replace it with another string of text. What is even better is that you can save your search as a query and reuse the next time you need to, i.e. after you have republished your iWeb site.
Uses of MRI with iWeb:
Many people find that iWeb has limitations, particularly around editing html files, basically iWeb does not offer any way to do this within the application. MRI allows you to edit the html files without having to open them every time, beware of Blog pages, any changes to them seems to upset the Comments feature. If you are happy not to have .Mac commenting the you can select your website folder and search all files, but if you want commenting, then its time to pick individual files. This isn’t as bad as it sounds, you only have to do it once, then save the query.
There are other solutions for commenting such as iComment and Haloscan, but having used neither I am unable to discuss Pro’s and Con’s. But I do know that lots of people use them both when hosting on non .Mac servers.
Some examples of MRI queries are listed below, each one links to a tutorial page:
-
-
•Adding StatCounter code
-
•Removing reflections from .Mac hosted slideshows
-
•Redirecting a Navigation Bar link
-
•Change page headers, see the top of this page (The page is called MRI in iWeb)
-
•More to come as I think of them!
