How do I edit one site using two Mac’s?
For those of you lucky enough to have two Mac’s that are capable of maintaining iWeb site, it is possible to edit your site on both machines. Or you might be moving from one Mac to another, newer Intel powered machine!
Please be aware that it is not currently possible to merge two sites, or work on one site simultaneously from both machines. The methods on this page cover moving the site from one machine to work on it on another.
I would suggest that if you are in either of the positions above, then you need to buy yourself a USB drive, like those shown below.
USB drives come in all different shapes, colors, sizes and capacity. Pick one that is best for your budget and that is big enough to hold your site. If you have a lot of photos then your domain file can very quickly grow.
To check the size of your domain file, just click on it in Finder and the size will be shown, or choose Get Info.
Then buy a drive that suits your needs, I would suggest a capacity of either 256MB or 512MB.
Now, back to how to edit one site from two computers.
Firstly, plug in your USB drive and watch it mount on your desktop, now locate your domain file (User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain). Once you have found it, you need to move it to your USB memory stick, simply drag and drop.
In order for this to work properly when publishing to .Mac you need to enter the same .Mac user details into Applications/System Preferences/.Mac. If you don’t then iWeb won’t know where to publish, it will publish if these details are completed, but it may not be to where you expect.
Please remember to make a backup copy of your domain file, if something happens to your USB drive and don’t have another copy of this file, you will be sad :(
Now you have two options of how you launch your site.
Plug in your USB drive, containing your domain file, into a spare USB port of the computer you would like to use to edit your site, then....
Note: If you are publishing to .Mac then make sure that the same .Mac account details are on both machines
1. Simply double click the domain file on the memory stick and it will launch iWeb.
2. If you prefer to launch iWeb from the iWeb icon in your dock you need to do the following
-
• Make sure that the User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder does not contain a domain file, i.e. you have moved the original file that you were using.
-
• Now launch iWeb and you will get the following prompt:
Click on Choose Domain, as you already have a domain file, you will be presented with a browser which you need to use to locate your domain file on your USB drive.
Now that you have done this, iWeb will look for the file here, unless you choose a domain file in another location, iWeb remembers the location of the last domain file to be opened.
This means that if your have your USB drive plugged in and mounted and you click on the iWeb icon in your dock, your site will be opened. If your USB drive isn’t plugged in and mounted then you will be presented with the pop-up above, as iWeb is looking for it on your USB drive, which isn’t there!
Repeat this process on both computers and then all you need to do is plug in your USB drive let it mount and then click on the iWeb icon.
If you opt for Create Domain, it will ask you to choose a location where you would like to create the new domain file.
Remember to quit iWeb before you properly Eject your USB drive from OSX.
